Central Station Renewal on the Right Track

The Sydney Business Chamber says the transformation of the vast Central Station precinct is a step closer following the awarding of the $955 million contract for the Sydney Metro Stations at Central and the Central Walk upgrade.

“Today’s announcement that Laing O’Rourke will start work immediately on Australia’s busiest station represents the first step in transforming the Central Station Precinct and the next opportunity for major urban renewal in the Sydney CBD,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.

“Central Station is a major gateway to Sydney and the future Metro system will create the opportunity to kick-start a wave of new jobs and economic investment.

“Located close to the emerging innovation precinct identified by the Greater Sydney Commission at Camperdown/Ultimo and with major universities, health and educational facilities and a thriving start-up community, the rejuvenation of the broader Central Precinct must be a priority for government.

“Just as Barangaroo created a new jobs hub in the CBD, so will redevelopment over and adjoining Central Station gives Sydney an outstanding opportunity to create a new commercial hub that will build on the opportunities the Metro system is creating for Sydney.

“Central Station is well overdue for transformation and new stations and enhanced access must be the catalyst for creating a new precinct that will attract investment, create jobs and give Sydney another opportunity to grow its economy as a centre of technology, innovation and creativity,” Mrs Forsythe said.
